Overview

In 1963, the Syracuse Nationals moved to Philadelphia and became the Philadelphia 76ers .

By 1967, the 76ers held the league’s best record and won the NBA championship led by Wilt Chamberlain, Hal Greer and Billy Cunningham.

Cunningham would return to coach the 76ers and lead them to the NBA championship in 1983 – Philadelphia’s last major championship – with a 4-0 sweep over the Los Angeles Lakers thanks to the help of Maurice Cheeks, Julius Erving and Moses Malone.

In 1999, the team made its first trip to the playoffs since 1991 when Charles Barkley led the team to the Eastern Conference Finals.

In 2001, the Sixers ignited that famous Philadelphia spirit by winning the NBA Eastern Conference and making it to the NBA Finals for the first time in 23 years, which the team repeated in 2002.

The Sixers made it to the playoffs a handful of times over the next 10 years, with appearances from notable players Allen Iverson, Andre Iguodala, Andrew Bynum and others.

The Process

The Sixers began rebuilding the franchise after the 2012-13 season, known to fans and around the league as “The Process,” ending the next two seasons with some of the worst records in the team’s history.

Following a number of trades and the 2016 overall first-round draft pick, the Sixers acquired promising players like Joel Embiid, Dario Šarić, Jahlil Okafor, Markelle Fultz and Ben Simmons, among others.

The Sixers had their most successful season in 2017-18 since 2011-12, finishing in third place in the Eastern Conference as fans sported signs and shirts vowing to “Trust the Process.”

The team made the first two rounds of the NBA Playoffs in the 2018-19 season, headed into the 2019-20 season with recent additions Jimmy Butler, Tobias Harris, Mike Scott and  Boban Marjanović.
